AWARENESS
OVER 10 YEARS SUPPORTING AFRICAN VILLAGE COMMUNITIES

Our belief is that an informed community is key to sustainable autonomy. To this end we have a team of full time coaches ( “Animateurs” in French )  that continuously educate people about the risks of polluted water and the issues of domestic and community hygiene.
Our Animateurs are recruited from the local communities so that they speak the local languages, understand the culture and are sensitive to the communities’ issues. These Animateurs are provided through our local partners after an IDO selection process. They work full time on IDO projects, are fully funded by IDO and receive specific IDO training.

AUTONOMY
1000 + WATER MANAGEMENT COMMITTEES

For a village to achieve autonomy, our experience is that there has to be an authority within the community that is responsible for the access to the water point and for taking care of it technically and financially. Our belief is that this is best achieved through the creation of a village Water Management Committee ( COGPE in French ) that is accountable to the village community for these responsibilities and that the COGPE then becomes an important contributor to the economic and social development of the village.
The Animateurs assist the village in the creation of their COGPE and the election of its members. IDO then groups together the COGPEs from the region and provides training to the elected members on their responsibilities and how best to execute them.
Experience shows that it takes time for the autonomy to be become embedded sustainably.  For this reason, the Animateurs will continue to regularly engage and mentor their assigned COGPEs and village communities.
